Flåm and the Flåm Valley

The Flåm Valley is a tight and narrow valley that cuts into the 1,200-1,500 metre high mountain plain to the south of the Aurland Fjord. Throughout history, people have settled where the countryside has allowed. Their agricultural lifestyle was based around the verdant alpine pastures. The great change came at the end of the end of the nineteenth century, with emigration to America and the construction of the railway line between Bergen and Oslo. In 1897, the construction road to Myrdal and beyond was built.

Some of the mountain farms are now derelict, but domestic animals are still kept in Flåm, mainly goats and sheep.
